A neighbourhood club

Sixty-eight years of Saturday mornings.

Westfield was built by people who didn’t have a club to go to, so they made one. Every couple of decades, someone’s idea has nudged us along — and somehow the kettle never quite stops boiling.

  1. 1958

    Founded by the park keepers

A handful of council groundsmen pooled wages to lay two clay courts behind the Victorian pavilion.

  2. 1973

    First junior summer school

Three weeks of sandwiches, lemon squash and tennis for any kid in the postcode. Still runs every August.

  3. 1991

    Two courts become four

Floodlights and the second pair of hard courts arrive — funded by a memorable bake sale season.

  4. 2024

    A proper rebuild

Full resurfacing, a refurbished clubhouse, and a roster of coaches running sessions seven days a week.

Four courts

Two clay, two hard,
all four floodlit.

Clay for the long, fair rallies. Hard for the late-evening matches. Floodlights stay on until ten — and the bar serves until eleven.

Court 1

Clay

Old-school En Tout Cas. Slow, fair and forgiving — our resident coaches favour this one for lessons.

  • Floodlit
  • All-weather cover
  • Lesson court

Court 2

Clay

The doubles favourite. South-facing, sheltered by lime trees, and the prettiest court in the park come July.

Court 3

Hard (acrylic)

Resurfaced in 2024. Quick under foot, true bounce, and lit until 10pm for after-work matches.

Court 4

Hard (acrylic)

The pavilion

The original 1958 pavilion, refurbished in 2024. Changing rooms, hot showers, a small pro shop, and a bar that does the best chips in the postcode.

  • Same-day racquet stringing
  • Pavilion bar & kitchen, Thu–Sun
  • Children’s play area
  • Free parking, twelve spaces
  • Step-free access throughout
  • Bike racks at the gate

What members say.

I joined Westfield the week I moved to Birmingham — I knew literally nobody. Three months in, I had a Wednesday doubles partner, a standing supper invite, and a backhand that finally went where I aimed it. It’s the friendliest club I’ve ever played at.

  • The juniors programme is the best in Edgbaston. My two are at the club five days a week in summer, and I genuinely don’t see them again until tea.

Coach Sam re-built my serve in three sessions. Twelve months later I’m playing county league and frankly enjoying tennis for the first time since I was twenty-two.

We use the corporate membership as a small staff perk and it’s genuinely the most-used benefit we offer. The pavilion bar after a Friday match is half the appeal.
